LEGO has finally revealed the upcoming LEGO Year of the Dragon (40611) gift with purchase set. The dragon is part of the ongoing series of LEGO zodiac animals which should be finishing up in a few years. There’s still no word on when the set will go live but I’m assuming it’ll be pretty soon since the Lunar New Year is just a few weeks away. Mark the 2024 Lunar New Year with this LEGO® Year of the Dragon build-and-display set (40611) for ages 8 and up. The dragon model features the zodiac animal’s iconic big eyes and a movable tail. It comes with a brick-built base representing the sky and clouds, plus a red paper envelope symbolizing good wishes. A fun Lunar New Year gift idea for all the family to enjoy, this model is part of a collectible series of LEGO zodiac animals. The post LEGO Year of the...

There probably has been no better time to be in the LEGO MOC building community than right now when in comes to finding a building contest or activity to participate in. Each new month brings us another series of inspiring building prompts. Some of them have become annual traditions, arriving like seasons of the year. Others challenge us to build in areas that have yet to be explored. We compile a comprehensive list of these LEGO contests to help you find the ones that best fit your interests or may provide you with a creative spark to try something new. …And occasionally, we also have a contest idea of our own to add to that list. First orc I built, which ended up as a trophy prize for the contest. How Orctober Was Born Sometime last summer, I was chatting with my friend Alex from BricksLog (a LEGO-related website for the...

Best of BrickNerd — Article originally published Jan. 24, 2023 and updated on Jan. 14, 2024. In 2016, The LEGO Group published its colour palette listing all the moulding colours in production. Seven years on, and with no sign of an updated palette being released, I thought it would be a nice exercise to update the 2016 palette for all the new colours released since then. Additionally, I’m going to re-organise the colours into families, mainly to appease my OCD for understanding the world by organising it!     © The Lego Group Some terminology before we begin. I am going to use BrickLink colour names as they are simpler while also being more widely used across the community. And apologies to our American readers, but I am going to spell ‘Colour’ and ‘Grey’ in the Oxford (and The LEGO Group) tradition. This is a long article, so if you want to...

The 2024 Lunar New Year is exactly four weeks away and Amazon has the LEGO Lunar New Year Display (80110) for 20% off. It’s been on sale for a while but this set has a generic style that will work for every new year and not for any specific zodiac sign. The set has officially been retired on the LEGO Shop so going to other retailers is the only way to get it now. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. It took a while but I’ve finally had some time to do a 2023 recap for The Brick Fan. Some of you guys might not be interested but it’s for my reference since I love stats. Our post count went down again last year, down to 885, however, we almost hit the 30 million page view mark. We barely missed it by just 100,000 views which sounds about right since we had less posts. Last year, it was more family time for me as I was taking care of my mom more after her cancer surgery and I prioritized that a little more than what happened LEGO-wise. I expect that’ll be about the same this year as well. The highest traffic day was on May 1 with 251,277 page views when a lot of the summer 2023 sets were revealed that day. The higher traffic trend continued for the next seven...

Best of BrickNerd — Article originally published January 27, 2021. You might think since LEGO has populated the world with more than 4 billion minifigures that there would already be every part in existence to satisfy anything a fan could want. Yet the world of custom LEGO minifigures is vast! From head to toe and all the accessories in between, devoted LEGO fans have customized minifigures to be exactly what they want them to be through printing, injection molding, painting, sculpting, cutting and more. But what do all of these terms mean? What goes into each of these processes and why does it matter? These are a few of the questions I aim to answer, but before we start, I must ask another question… What Is Custom LEGO? Custom LEGO could be loosely defined as any official LEGO piece that has been physically modified by the user or any custom accessory...

Minerals Display by ddf72 is the latest project to achieve 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas. The build is a revamp of the minerals project that also reached the goal a few years ago but is now 100% buildable with parts that have been released since then. There is now also a case to hold all of the rocks. The project joins Spirited Away, Appa the Sky Bison, from Avatar the Last Airbender, and Venus Flytrap as the ones to reach the First 2024 Review Stage. Today’s guest article comes from Josh Parkinson, a LEGO builder specializing in forced perspective. He shares with us the final build progression and lighting of his North Pole MOC. It was five months since my interview here on BrickNerd, and I had just completed the next major section of my largest build yet, The North Pole. I now had the elf workshops, the foreground foundation built, and the microscale background landscape done (check out Part 1 for the full details). Things were coming together and moving along smoothly. Next up was finishing the foreground trees, building the backdrop, lighting it, and bringing it all to my first LEGO convention, BrickCon. But it was time to put the North Pole MOC away for a bit as I was about to head out on a warm Southern California road trip for my birthday. I had several months before BrickCon—plenty of time, right? Well,...
