LEGO might be more commonly associated with three-dimensional models, but in recent years, the medium has seen an explosion of creativity around mosaics. While mosaics can be flat and tile-based, many builders play with texture and layering in ways that add depth. Greeble Mosaics take that to the extreme, adding large vertical elements, or even whole scenes, that dissolve into a painterly texture when seen from a distance. GothGirlBricks, a frequent mosaic builder, created her first greeble mosaic this Halloween and the results are spectacular. The builder started the project four weeks ago with a flat base layer of the raven and skull. While ravens may be “black,” there’s an iridescence to the feathers that she brings out with color highlights in the pink and blue spectrum. October brought no shortage of great LEGO content from around the globe! Here at BrickNerd, we started the month by providing a Spiderman-themed spider model for Halloween and ended it with instructions for a cute ghost trick-or-treater. We had some fun with Wednesday sets, and learned about customizing a real-world motorcycle with LEGO, and cracked the secret code of LEGO castle sets. We looked at removing printing from LEGO elements to create a new minifig look and investigated how minifigure keychains are constructed to repair a sentimental keepsake. We checked in with our FLL team, sent a castle to space, doubled down on developing a LEGO style, and learned more than we ever wanted to know about LEGO clowns. If you are not into Lovecraftian horrors beyond description, then congratulations, you are likely a fine, well-adjusted, upstanding individual. Here’s a puppy for you! Seriously, you’re probably better off for it. But, if you’re like me (and you know who you are), you are attuned to an entirely different wavelength. One that resides in the shadows. So, for you, with it being spooky season and all, I took it upon myself to bring the mood down and showcase some of the creepiest LEGO Lovecraftian horrors we’ve had the displeasure of summoning.
