Converting a Red Telephone Box Into a Blue TARDIS

Can a LEGO set be rebuilt into something else entirely, perhaps a bit more timey-wimey and blue? Today, we will find out. I recently was able to build LEGO Ideas 21437 Red London Telephone Box. For a very quick review, it is a very satisfying build. From the options for the different types of telephones inside to the clever SNOT techniques and the inclusion of a light, it is a delight to build. It’s also a quicker build than some of the other sets from the LEGO Ideas range. Although red telephone boxes are less common in the modern world of mobile phones, they are an iconic element of the London landscape. It is still readily found in souvenirs and countless Instagram and tourist photos. For many people, the red telephone box symbolises London just as much as the Tower Bridge or Big Ben. If you love all things London, this...

The Hilbert Brick: A Nerdy Build For Even Nerdier Builders

I’ve been following Cole Blaq for some time now. Usually it’s something like a cool spaceship that catches my eye. And why wouldn’t it? Wicked, right?!? HXT-748 Hilbert Curve But then the other day, I see this; “Hilbert Brick” he calls it. Hmmm? Time to ask the Google! Hilbert Brick Here’s what I found. But I have to warn you: This may get nerdy. In fact, even if you immediately know the answer to the question: “What is the intermix ratio between matter and anti-matter in the warp core of a Galaxy Class Federation Starship?” (one to one, obviously), you still may find this nerdy. Here goes: The Hilbert curve (also known as the Hilbert space-filling curve) is a continuous fractal space-filling curve first described by the German mathematician David Hilbert in 1891, as a variant of the space-filling Peano curves discovered by Giuseppe Peano in 1890. - Wikipedia Okay, that’s...

Oopsy Loop: The Joy and Frustration of a LEGO Train

Outside of enjoying LEGO with my kids, my main area of focus is my amusement park. For the most part, I buy existing LEGO sets and install them in the park instead of making MOCs. I feel blocked when I try to envision a MOC, I’m not sure if it’s a lack of vision or confidence but it’s not where I put my attention. Over the last six years, I’ve built up a decent-sized park that takes up about half of my limited office space. Occasionally, I have to modify a set to make it work. I’m not a total stranger to using BrickLink Stud.io and my imagination. For example, set 10244 Fairground Mixer was designed as a ride that could be packed up and driven away, whereas the rest of my rides are obviously permanent structures. I modified it to the below so it makes more sense as a permanent...

Intrepid LEGO reporter looking to branch out

The first thing I noticed about this wonderful LEGO Shoot the Bullet scene by Sweeps was the nice part usage (NPU) found close at hand. The 3 prong plant element makes a perfect hand for this chibi-style character named Aya Shameimaru (of Touhou Project fame). But the NPU doesn’t stop there. The ground is nicely textured with painters palettes and a nice bit of fall foliage. The recent new curved transparent bar in back is the perfect part to raise the character off the ground. TBB Mailbag – Time for some answers [Feature]

Thank you so much for all the great LEGO and TBB-related questions that have filled our mailbag this past week. I’ve got some answers for you below. But if you don’t see your question below, or my answers lead to more questions, the mailbag is still open on our original post. Non-LEGO sets What’s your opinion on non-Lego building block sets for designs not sold by Lego? I collect Speed Champions, and there are a lot of non-Lego sets available mainly from China that seem to me to be designs taken from Rebrickable and then sold commercially, presumably without any credit or payment to the original designer apart from maybe purchasing their design, and using “clone” copies of Lego elements. Personally I’d rather pay the designer through Rebrickable and buy parts through places like Bricklink, but I can see why some people go for the convenience of a third party supplier...
