scapebysam lives up to his name with this beautiful scale LEGO build of the Gold Coast in Australia. It is not just the breadth of this build that stands out. scapebysam has truly put wonderful detail on everything, being true to the buildings of the city. And while the builder calls out Q1, Australia’s tallest building, it’s the edgy Jewel towers that catch my eye. From this angle, we can see the multi-faceted Jewel in the foreground, and the tall Q1 clad in sand blue in the background. And taking the top-down vantage, you can make out all the roads lining up with the coast. There’s so much detail put into the different intersection designs, as well as road angles relative to the grid of city blocks. Viewing the model from its north, the “Brickvention” printed tile along the side comes into view. This isn’t the only bit of Aussie coastline...

In celebration of Mothers Day and the many AFOLs who became mothers or mothers who discovered LEGO through their children, we present this guest post from our own Kimberly Giffen. The day arrives when the oldest child receives her first LEGO set, and the time for endless hours of building with your children has come. As a family with an AFOL mother and four kids, so many hours have been spent on building. We build together, they move on to something else, and I continue building. There is joy in the process. Watching as my oldest leans into the storytelling aspect of LEGO while one of the twins blows my mind with his part usage. The progression of helping with sets to watching them finish advanced builds all on their own. We have learned together. They would give me build requests. Mom, can you build a house, a school, a waterfall...

The Imperial probe droid floating up above the snow drift in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back with its long limbs unfolding like a nightmare spider was terrifying enough, but this microscale model by Tim Goddard of the heavy viper droid seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story took that fright to a new level. Armed with more firepower and more armor, these droids really put a damper on the plans of our heroes, Han Solo and Chewbacca. The details on this tiny nightmare capture the sense of menace quite well. The post This LEGO heavy viper droid may be small but he packs a punch appeared first on The Brothers Brick. Sometimes constraints can inspire creativity, and limiting yourself to 101 pieces is certainly an interesting challenge. We’ve featured a few 101-piece LEGO challenge builds recently, and this cute wizard built with 101 parts by Syrdarian really makes me smile. The big round eyes and small smile, made from a single rounded tile, give major Adventure Time vibes. The staff that is almost as tall as him is also a great touch, and that little bookmark ribbon poking out the top is just magical. With LEGO clips for back spines, a tail of mismatched 1x2x2/3 slopes, and a video game controller for a head, Ian Summers shows us an awesome Toothless creation from the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. How long until we have the parts in white to make a Light Fury version of this microscale marvel? The post How to train your micro dragon [Building Technique] appeared first on The Brothers Brick. Here at Brothers Brick we have a soft spot for both vintage vehicles and sleek spacehips, so when a custom sky-fi model comes across our radar, we have to cover it. Thomas Weigelt is no stranger to flying craft that fuse retro and futuristic elements, and their latest creation might be my favorite craft the builder has yet made.  First, it’s a seaplane, which brings to mind the dogfights and adventure of Porco Rosso and Tail Spin. Second, it’s a biplane, with curved wings that evoke a dragonfly. And finally, it packs a monster piston engine that you can practically hear firing up. Thomas’s color blocking is phenomenal, with dark blue detailing, a complementary stripe of orange, and a pop of lime green on the propeller. The piston design uses wheels topped with ice skates and packs big muscle car energy. And the propeller blades are made from Uruk-hai swords, an inspired...

LEGO and video games are overlapping more and more, with partnerships with big players like Fortnite, Minecraft, Mario Kart, and even  Horizon taking up a growing share of LEGO releases. Of course, no amount of official sets can keep up with all the games being released on PC and consoles. Fortunately, there are plenty of amazing builders making custom versions of game characters we love. Kamil Karpiński is a builder we’ve spotlighted several times for his bolstered figs that integrate brick anatomy with minifig heads. For this tribute to From Software’s cult classic Bloodborne, the builder sticks with classic minifig parts and perfectly captures the Victorian horror aesthetic of the game. The rubber band wrapped around the sawtooth blade and the extra buckles on the arm really sell it. beyondb0nes also found inspiration in  Bloodborne with this minifig take on Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower. Sticking to From Software, Falcon Figs...

LEGO’s recent wave of Soapbox Derby 2-packs offers a wacky twist on racing with everything from hot dogs to hospital beds speeding for the win. Jarret (Wilderland Builds) rolls in with a pop-culture pairing where it’s impossible to pick a favorite. Do I go with Gandalf and his gas-guzzling Gwaihir, or Link and his N64 horsepower rumble pak wagon? I think the Hero of Time wins by a nose, thanks to that wonderfully nostalgic controller design. I’m an oldest sibling, so when we played video games growing up, I usually enjoyed Player One privileges. That is, until my siblings got better at the games than I did, and so I would get demoted to being a mere Player Two. I’m not sure which of these two LEGO ships that Brad K has built is which – I think tradition dictates that blue is one and red is two? Either way I don’t think I’d be disappointed with either in this case! There’s very little studs-up building in the ships themselves; it seems to almost all be sideways. In fact the bases seem like the only studs that are the right way up. But they’re a lovely touch too! Which one are you choosing?
