LEGO themes might officially come and go, but they live forever in our MOCs. And Braylon Turner is helping keep Ice Planet 2002’s memory alive and well with this Seraphic Scarab Amphibious Vehicle; a unique craft perfect for exploring the frozen frontier with powerful mechanized legs that can handle the harshest terrain. This build makes terrific use of Technic and even Bionicle pieces, giving it a unique look among the Ice Planet 2002 fleet, but the color scheme of black, white, and blue capped off with those trans-neon orange bits is unmistakable. LEGO’s biggest video game hits have featured minifig mayhem and slapstick adventures in the worlds of Star Wars, Batman, and Fortnite, but there is one LEGO game that took a different path. A Builder’s Journey was released in 2019 by Light Brick Studio, an internal development team inside of LEGO, and it offered a poignant and wordless puzzle experience similar to games like Monument Valley, but through an AFOL lens. It’s a beautiful game that offers a more meditative approach to playing with bricks. The original Star Wars hadn’t even been released when Alan Dean Foster started writing Splinter of the Minds Eye, the first story in the Star Wars Expanded Universe (later called Legends). Prior to Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney, telling stories in the Star Wars sandbox was a fairly freewheeling business, guided more by a code of honor to not contradict what came before, and to be game to retcon anything that George made canon.( I had first-hand experience writing in this era, penning a choose-your-own-adventure style book full of EU easter eggs.) These days, the Star Wars Universe feels a bit trapped between three aesthetically very different trilogies, with Dave Filoni doing his best to fold EU favorites like Thrawn into the continuity between Clone Wars and Rise of Skywalker. LEGO’s Balrog Book Nook set has many Lord of the Rings fans (including our reviewer) feeling as conflicted as Smeagol, simultaneously coveting the brick-built Bane of Durin while gagging (*GOL-LUM!*) at the price. Joe Lam solved this riddle by building a Book Nook small enough for a Took, and readers, we are shook. The itty bitty Balrog’s grimspawn body towers over trophy Gandalf. Joe’s version even folds up like the real deal and is sized perfectly to rest between your matchbooks. For those unfamiliar with the lingo, a ‘dark age’ is a period in one’s life where LEGO is not present. Sounds awful, right? When the Red Lotus captured Korra, they thought they could end the Avatar cycle once and for all. Too bad for them, Korra wasn’t about to go down without an epic fight. The season 3 finale of The Legend of Korra was a series high, and builder Dan O’Connor renders it beautifully in LEGO. The mosaic mandala is wonderfully crafted from dark green tiles Dan pairs the minifig scene with a Minilander build as the Red Lotus venom brings out Korra’s Avatar state. Over the last three years, builder and video creator Jason (JustBeardy) has been working on a massive motorized LEGO tribute to Sonic the Hedgehog’s Green Hill Zone. Built from roughly 30,000 bricks, the diorama draws on specific gameplay elements of the iconic level, all lovingly rendered in the 16-bit style of the classic SEGA Genesis game. While the front view of the level is slick and studless with every pixel in its place, a look behind the Technic scaffolding reveals how much mechanical wizardry went into making the scene come alive. Jason would have been done sooner, but needed a new drive train to power so many motorized elements. Of course, a project like this is meant to be seen in motion, so it’s best to watch the reveal video to appreciate Jason’s most ambitious work to date.
