Acknowledging that the size and complexity of sets has become overwhelming for many builders, LEGO announced today the Creator 1-of-3 line that promises to let fans build at their own pace. The first wave features a scaled-up Classic Space Minifigure serialized over 3 separate sets. Together the sets contain an intimidating 694 pieces, but don’t sweat it! With the 1-of-3 line, the model is split into more manageable stand-alone kits with modest piece counts designed to lower anxiety.  LEGO Creator 1-of-3 40125 Classic Space Torso, the largest of the wave, consists of an up-scaled Minifigure torso containing 274 parts and features the iconic Classic Space logo and posable arms and hands. Set 40126 Classic Space Legs trails its torso counterpart with 231 pieces and features movable legs, while set 40127 Classic Space Head rounds out the trio with 189 pieces, comprising of a blue helmet and the iconic smiling yellow Minifigure...

The puzzle goes like this: you have a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage and you have to transport all three across a river by boat. As a LEGO minifig serf, you can only carry one passenger in your boat at a time. If you leave the goat and the cabbage unattended, the goat will eat the cabbage. Same deal with the wolf and the goat. What is the fewest number of trips you need to take in order to get all three across the river without anyone being eaten? On Minifig Mondays, we take a break from brick-intensive builds to appreciate the creativity found in the minifig scene. We prioritize characters made with official LEGO elements where the combination of accessories and expressions creates a personality that entrances the viewer. On that note, this week’s theme is magic using minifigs, and this set of characters has us spellbound! Captain Dark Shark creates a wandering feline sorceress that surely has nine lifetimes of adventures to share. Even though the head draws from the Wizarding World (a polyjuice-ified Hermione), this fig gives big anime or cozy game vibes. ASortaOkayBuilder also brings a Potterverse cat to the table for this apprentice illusionist. The poor wizard strains under the load of too much study material! Zane Houston is something of a LEGO mech expert (a mechspert, if you will. You won’t? OK, fair enough). So after getting his hands on a couple of LEGO’s new Speed Champions F1 cars, the only natural conclusion was an epic racing mech! The long, spindly legs just ooze speed, and the wheels at the base are a nice touch. Zane has made deft use of the myriad printed and stickered pieces as well. Some replicate their original function – the rear wing elements, for instance – while others, like the nose cone, find a use in some futuristic-looking shaping. When you look at this cute corner shop with a cherry tree in full blossom by JakobKaiserMOCs the attention to detail stands out, from the scattering of pink flower elements as fallen blossoms to the balcony on the second floor with a small bird perched on the railing. I think my favorite detail is the roof pattern, made using baseplates from the Dungeons and Dragons collectible minifigure series. Sometimes the inception of an original creation comes from a single LEGO part, whether by looking at it in a new way or, as doubtless was the case for this Lord of the Rings tribute by builder Stefan Johansson, by making the absolute most of an apparently natural application. Stefan sets the bar sky high (and crosses fantasy franchises) with this use of the Thunderbird head element from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, fleshing it out into a perfectly proportioned Great Eagle of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The texture achieved by combining a wide variety of tiles across the wingspan really elevates this creation (beautiful plumage, innit?) and the restrained lighting both hides the model’s single transparent support and captures the mood of one of the film’s memorable scenes where Frodo and Sam hail a lift home after an epic guys’ night out. When I started building spaceships as a kid and teen, I assumed the only possible angles were the ones found on sloped bricks and wing plates. Seeing the smooth curves that builders like MWBricks can coax out of LEGO is nothing short of miraculous. The builder calls this flying beast the Yelets LOng RangeD Exploder, part of the Goznian Psycho Navy. With a raised cockpit and a recon jet docked and ready, the Yelets owns the unfriendly skies. MWBricks works with Studio and physical bricks when designing ships like the Yelets. Some of the tricks the builder has come up with to achieve the perfect angle are equal parts impressive and anxiety-inducing, using friction and rubber bands when stud connections aren’t enough.
