A galactic library on the back of a giant turtle joins Star Wars: Teal Squadron collab
Teal Squadron is a UK Star Wars collaboration for Space builders who love Star Wars and the color teal, featuring familiar builders like Mansur Soeleman and set designer Theo Bonner. The Collab is returning to Bricktastic in Manchester next week, and today we have a preview of a fun addition to the Teal Nebula: the Turtle Library! Built by Jake (jayfourke), the model continues the collab’s tradition of exploring the more whimsical side of the Star Wars universe, featuring a droid-manned library built atop an enormous space turtle. Paired with Tim Goddard‘s Lunt Snail caravan, I sense a theme for this year’s collab!
The builder is no stranger to large-scale space creations, as Jake has participated in SHIPtember for many years. This model posed some interesting challenges, though:
I’ll be honest, this was not the most fun build. The shell took several revisions to get right, and while the internal structure is SHIP-grade solid, all the peripheral bits have a habit of shifting just that little bit to make things difficult. I built the underbelly when it was upside-down, and then flipping it over shifted the weight on the click hinges which then caused it all not to fit together properly. Gravity is, and remains, my greatest nemesis.
The collab’s signature teal color makes its appearance on the library. Lighting is supplied by USB packs hidden securely inside the turtle’s shell.
Adding to the whimsy, Jake brings in a maintenance team. A droid looks like it’s pulling space barnacles off the turtle’s back, while a human worker surveys the labor from atop his space-horse mount.
For the massive turtle, Jake originally planned to make it more overtly alien, but the builder was so pleased with the head that he decided to run with a more realistic design, using color and lights to push the alien factor.
Jake’s Turtle Library will join Teal Squadron in Bricktastic, the UK’s premier LEGO fan event, from February 21-22. For a taste of what to expect, here is last year’s increcible Teal Squuadron display:
