Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger: Updating Exo-Force mecha with modern MOCs [Guest Feature]

There’s something undeniably magical about cracking open a cardboard box of old LEGO sets and rediscovering the joy they once sparked. Recently, I scored a massive lot of Exo-Force sets that had seen better days, dusty, broken and seasoned with that unmistakable scent of nostalgia. As a kid, I was obsessed with these towering mechs battling across futuristic battlefields. The intricate designs, the faction colors, and the endless play possibilities made Exo-Force one of my all-time favorite themes. Yet somehow, it took years for the idea to click: why not dive back in and create modern MOCs that honor the originals while pushing them to new heights? There are so many talented MOC builders out there who have delved deep into Exo-Force and I figured I’d try my hand at it too!

Exo-Force’s appeal lies in its perfect blend of chunky, poseable mechs and a rich lore of human pilots versus robot invaders. The sets delivered satisfying builds with clever Technic integration, but time and experience have given us better techniques, part availability, and creative freedom. Today I’ll walk you through the first three of my revamps: the mighty, the nimble scout Uplink, and the menacing Sentry drone.

The Grand Titan: From Display Piece to Towering Powerhouse

We’ll kick things off with the biggest and boldest of the trio, the Grand Titan. This mech began life as a copy of set 71846, The Fire Knight Mech from Ninjago, a striking display model that pits the fire knight mech against a horrific, tentacled, eldritch abomination. And while I adore the original model, I knew that it’s frame would be perfect for my vision of the Grand Titan.

The rebuild process started with a complete teardown to the bare frame. This is my favorite part of any major MOC: stripping everything back lets you see the engineering underneath and opens the door to real improvements. I retained the core proportions and signature features, broad shoulders, sturdy legs, well articulated limbs, while enhancing as much as I could along the way.

A big part of my aspirations for this model came from incorporating original stickered elements from the 7701 Grand Titan alongside a treasure trove of parts from my collection. These vintage stickers add that unmistakable retro charm that even modern prints have failed to replicate. Seriously Exo-Force sticker sheets put most modern sets 5 times their size to shame, they really packed a ton of stickers into those mechs. I started off by reinforcing the torso for better rigidity, stripped off some of the bulky armor plates for smoother posing, and redesigned the shoulders to match the original mech’s design.

The result is a mech that feels like an evolution rather than a departure. It stands taller and more intimidating, with improved balance for dynamic display poses. The original fire knight mech’s silhouette remains relatively prominent, but now they integrate with more intricate greebling and unmistakable Exo-Force flavor. Many hours were spent tweaking shoulder armor and leg assemblies until the proportions felt just right. If you’re tackling a large hero mech, my advice is to prioritize structural integrity early. A wobbly giant loses its grandeur fast. Trust me this guy toppled a couple times nearly sending me back to the drawing board.

Uplink: Nimble Scout with Personality to Spare

Next up is Uplink (originally 7708), the smallest and least impressive human mech from the first wave. As a scout unit, it was designed for speed and reconnaissance rather than brute force, and I was determined to preserve that lightweight, nimble character in my reimagining.

I kept the classic orange-and-gray color scheme intact. The bulky shoulder armor, famously borrowed from LEGO’s short-lived Technic hockey figures, remains a quirky highlight. That oddball part choice always made Uplink stand out, so it was non-negotiable to keep it front and center.

To add fresh flair, I pulled apart Sebulba’s midi-scale podracer set, which supplied some excellent orange components that blended seamlessly. I focused on enhancing articulation in the arms and legs, allowing for more expressive poses that suggest quick movement across the battlefield.

This little guy brings back memories of zipping him around the living room carpet as a kid, dodging imaginary laser fire. Now he looks ready for the next mission.

Sentry: Industrial Menace with Serious Upgrades

Finally, we turn to the dark side with Sentry (7711), one of the evil robot army’s compact assault units. Like Uplink, Sentry holds a special place in my collection. I picked up both around the same time when I was a kid, and they’ve been battle buddies (or rivals) ever since.

As the war for the split peak drags on, both sides continue to upgrade their frontline units. The Mk III sentry boasts improved mobility, armor and weapon systems. With laser targeting acid breacher missiles and a heavy plasma beam emitter, this new and improved sentry is far more of a threat than its predecessors.

Now when most people rebuild these mechs, I see them use the original pearl copper Exo-Force Iron Drones which, while cool aren’t as fun in my opinion. Many folks have tried their hand at redesigning and brick-building Mecha-One’s evil drones using the baby carrier head technique we saw LEGO use in the Ninjago City Gardens set on Scoop the Janitor Bot. I took it a step further and added some articulated arms and a digi-grade style of leg that gave the bots a more industrial feel.

Best of all, the baby carriers happen to come in dark tan, which matches the original color scheme of Sentry perfectly. I tried to give Sentry a bit more panache than the original set had, bulking it up slightly and giving it some much needed articulation and detail.

Exo-Force may no longer be in active production, but its modular design philosophy and bold color palettes make it a goldmine for MOC builders.
