Today, I am going to take you through my journey of creating a Great Ball Contraption (GBC) module out of a single $33 LEGO Technic set together with my Dutch-speaking GBC friends—and also show what the atmosphere is like at LEGO World Utrecht 2024 when you split up into teams. For background, BrickNerd-in-Chief Dave challenged me to build a GBC module from a single set and offered to provide the set, too. This way, new builders could have an easy way to enter the world of GBC without having to purchase many different parts. It also would be a fun way to show what the design process is like and give insight into the GBC loop to our readers. With those goals in mind, it was time to choose the set. Deciding Which Set To Use While browsing LEGO.com, I searched for a relatively inexpensive set to ensure the module would...

If you’ve ever been on the inside tour or visited Billund before Skærbæk Fan Weekend, you’ll know that there are a surprising amount of LEGO Group-related buildings hidden in plain sight all around the town. From its humble farmland beginnings, Billund has been the perfect spot to expand the company’s facilities as needed. As the LEGO Group broke ground on the new Innovation Campus last month, I thought it would be pertinent to share just how many nooks and crannies of the otherwise sleepy town are bustling with brick-based life! Out of respect for the staff around town I won’t be including exact locations, but if you find yourself walking about while visiting, you’ll now know what you’re looking at! We all know that build inspiration isn’t always easy to come by. Sometimes finding an idea can be just as difficult as bringing the idea to reality! This is where LEGO collaborations, building standards, and themed challenges come in. Sometimes having a base to work from or being part of a larger puzzle can help bring a build— and its builder—to life. To help builders achieve that goal, we’ve compiled as many themes and projects with published standards we could think of, ranging from the big like New Hashima all the way to the vaguest of weekly challenges that can help motivate you to begin your next build that plugs right into the LEGO community! Some of these collabs have been huge for years, while others have faded into the background, but it doesn’t take much to bring inspiration back to the spotlight! From MILS to Micropolis, there are many different...

A few months ago, I exhibited a sizeable LEGO train layout built entirely from MILS modules placed on venue-provided tables. No doubt, the phrase “venue-provided tables” will already conjure up a range of uncomfortable memories for those of you familiar with setting up large LEGO creations (not just train layouts) that span one or more tables! Venue tables range in both quality and vintage, from elderly specimens made from de-laminating warped plywood to more modern sagging injection molded plastic. No matter their provenance, we can always assume that these tables will neither be flat nor consistent! And nowhere is this phenomenon more apparent than at the joint between adjacent tables. I am sure many of you are familiar with the trial-and-error process of endlessly shimming the legs of tables not only to achieve flatness but also to correct the inevitable difference in vertical height between adjacent tables. The Joint Problem The...
