How do you follow up the anarchic mischief of the Muppet Show? For Jim Henson’s team, the answer was the wholesome hippy magic of Fraggle Rock. The Main Five Fraggless – Gobo, Wembey, Mokey, Boober, and Red – were precursors of the Inside Out emotions, neuroses made felt. My favorite was aways Boober, the curmudgeonly chef, laundry washer, and homebody. Prolific Bionicle builder Abby Lilliebridge is also a fan, as she brought the loveable grump to life in LEGO. Abby gives her usual Bionicle bits a break, working instead with System parts. Light aqua works well for Boober’s distinctive pale fur. A delicious-looking radish makes the perfect accessory.  You can learn more about the prolific Bionicle creator in this interview with Abby from 2022. When a LEGO sculpture can capture emotion, dynamism, and organic shapes without exposing how the pieces hold together, it’s nothing short of magic. Sakiya Watanabe (N.A.B.E_mocs) is truly a sorcerer of bricks, as demonstrated by his latest sculpture of the storm god Fujin. There are so many inspired parts in the head alone – raptor jaws for ears,  bigfig fists for cheeks, Balin’s hairpiece for the chin. I can’t even begin to figure out how that hair holds together. Sakiya based his design on the famous Fujin and Raijin painted screen by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a national treasure from the Edo period, displayed in Kyoto. The magnificent and monstrous Fujin follows another character model that Sakiya constructed just in time for Japan Brickfest last month. “Aria, the Spirit of Melody” is an original creation that pairs the fairy with a wooden branch in the shape of a musical horn. Once again, the...

The Black Pearl? Didn’t she last sail off LEGO shelves back in 2012? Well, ye best start believing in ghost stories, as the Black Pearl is back, bigger and bolder, as LEGO Icons 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship. In addition to an awkward name change, the new Black Pearl (let’s agree that she’s still called that) is assembled from 2,862 pieces, up from 804 in her maiden voyage, adding detail, a larger scale, and a display stand.  At 25 inches in both length and height, the Black Pearl is comparable in scale to 71042 Silent Mary, the last big Pirates of the Caribbean set (and one of my “grail” sets that I kick myself for not getting back in the day). Priced at $379.99, Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate ship continues a trend of bigger sets and bigger price tags, joining Batman, Harry Potter, Willy Wonka, and Wicked in a crowded...

The anime film Suzume, written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, premiered in 2022, in the midst of the pandemic, and was a wonderful escape that won critical acclaim. So it is certainly not surprising that it has inspired LEGO builders around the world, like Jean-Philippe Leroux, who has recreated the image from the promotional poster in stunning detail. The weathered white door set in a broken brick wall serves as the central focus, while the round building with rib-like frames curving upward in the background perfectly captures the source material. Today’s moment of peace and tranquility comes from the Golden Vallé vignette by Rémy (Rilbist). By Rémy’s own description, this family has lived in peace for quite a while at their windmill. I won’t ask Rémy how many plant stems were used, but they provide the most amazing texture for the field of wheat to frame this windmill. By adding varied height in the vignette, Rémy creates a natural flow to the field while also hiding the base of build itself, leaving the viewer with the texture of the dried wheat field. This spectacular model came in second place in its category in the Summer Joust. For a full list of winners, catch up with our Summer Joust 2025 roundup. The LEGO Group sent The Brothers Brick a free trial of this service for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews. Most of the time, the thought of non-official custom minifigs makes me twitchy… But then I was invited to try out the new Minifigure Factory Designer on Lego.com, and I was surprised by how much fun it was. I could even use it to create a new Castle faction! Of course, any new faction is also an excuse to create a new custom design, but first, let’s take the Minifigure Factory for a spin. While some LEGO stores have these Minifig Factory Stations on site, LEGO also allows you to create them directly on their website and have them shipped to you! (Sadly this feature is only available in the USA for the moment). You can mix and match parts, select a head, pick...

Summer movie season is coming to an end, having reinvigorated the superhero genre with great entries for both Marvel and DC. While it will be some time before the next super-powered crossover hits screens, the genre is still popping in the LEGO minifig community. Today on Minifig Monday, we bring you a mix of headlining heroes and deep cut villains from a legion of incredible LEGO fig fans. Be sure to add the creators to your pull list and give them a like. Now, dear readers, without further ado – Excelsior! When it comes to adapting Marvel for the screen, 2024’s X-Men ’97 is as good as it gets. LEGO’s X-Mansion introduced a few more mutants to minifig form, with some big omissions. Boderson Bricks steps up with Xavier’s gifted team of mutants, bringing Jubilee and Morph into the fold. Boderson also recreates the larger supporting cast of allies and villains,...

Despite what many movies would have us believe, working the night shift as a museum guard is probably a pretty quiet job most of the time… unless you work in this museum scene by Mark, who has crafted a fun story about a group of burglars who have infiltrated the dinosaur wing with less than wholesome plans while a trio of guards enter the scene on patrol. I like the use of a molded T-Rex head on the back wall, and the wall dioramas are lit to reveal displays. I do have one question, though, and that is just why are there so many cats roaming the museum at night? Maybe they are supposed to distract the guards. Were you able to spot all 3 burglars? Here at The Brothers Brick, we’ve seen mechs of every imaginable shape and size. But few of them pack the whimsical punch of this giant robotic duck by Cody Avery. I love how the model seamlessly blends heavy industrial design with cartoonish touches. For instance, those feet look like they should be stamping out parts in some sort of super advanced car factory, but they come at the end of the spring wrapped legs. And while I would wager that most of the bricks used in the build are shades of gray, there’s just enough red, yellow, and blue that the robot feels vibrant and colorful. Do not adjust your screen. Today’s round-up of Vignweek builds features topsy-turvy creations around the theme “upside down.” This is also the last set of builds created with a 24-hour limit. Some builds are photographed upside down, others are constructed from the ceiling down, and others split the difference with mirror worlds. These are just a selection of the incredible upside-down vignettes from both familiar builders and some new faces. You can always count on NikiFilik for bright and playful builds, and today is no exception. What a fun twist on perspective as this stunt plane flips in the sky. Someone had to do it, and that someone was buillding_after_dark. Spider-man’s upside-down kiss remains one of the most iconic scenes in all of superhero cinema and the builder recreates it perfectly. Not one to leave us hanging, Mork Builds pays tribute to another famous movie scene of a dangling hero. Poor Luke...
