Let’s crash the castle with these mighty LEGO minifigs and their custom gear [Minifig Monday]
For minifig fans, there are few themes as enduring as the medieval knight. Classic castle themes brought the age of chivalry to LEGO back in 1978, and the factions introduced since then continue to grow to this day (you can even invent your own, like the chicken knights, with the Minifigure Factory). Today we’re taking another look at knights with a special focus on customized weapons and armor made from 100% LEGO parts.
Many minifig creators these days are inspired by the dark gothic settings of FromSoftware’s games. Natashia (motherofcatdragons) pays tribute to Elden Ring’s Night’s Cavalry, armed with a perfect flail.
Sandman_BrickStudio is a new face on the custom minifig scene but already creating some incredible characters. This helmet crest technique is brilliant, as is the truly epic two-handed sword design.
Red Impala repurposes a fencing helmet to equip this holy crusader. The ayers of cloth on the armor are so clean and effective. It would be a pity if this knight got blood on them.
The Assassin Knight from Garret (2p_figs) is an amazing study in color, keeping a busy little build coherent and clean thanks to a limited color palette of crimson and gold.
Jacob Manahan‘s Dragon Slayer Tsorim, definitely slays. As cool as the spear is, it’s the helmet that impresses most, with that Blacktron visor pairing so nicely with the samurai helm, almost like a Death Star gunner’s helm. Also note the two layers of skirting and the bowtie – never show up at a dragon’s den under-dressed!
cgarr_bricks came up with a wonderful halberd design using parts you probably have lying around. Turns out Technic connectors make great sockets for spears and halberds. See also Jacob’s knight above.
Today we have two characters from beyondb0nes. First, bones stays true to his handle with this skeletal centurion. The helmet plumage is an impressive at 4-studs-wide! The spear is amazing with ring and ice skate, and hey, another Technic connector!
“She Whose Name Must Be Silenced” is one of my favorite of Bones’ creations thanks to her creative trident made from the headpiece of Ninjago villain Chief Mammatus. We see a lot of teal in Star Wars fan creations, but it doesn’t show up often in medieval builds and is much welcome here!
fish.buckle is another new face, having only started sharing builds this summer. They bring a decidedly retro feel to their characters, sticking to basic yellow faces and papercraft backdrops reminiscent of early 80s LEGO packaging. The characters seem simple at first glance, but hide innovative techniques, like this knight’s gauntlets made from the ends of a classic rubber hose.
Another retro axeman uses a Blacktron visor as a shoulder guard, held in place by friction thanks to the layered capes that serve as a tabard.
Elden Bricks completed a series of mounted knights recently. This one is my favorite, especially for the bulked up shield technique and impressive helmet decoration.
Falcon Figs shares a tragic backstory for this knight, formerly Therl Estekives, now known as the Warrior of the Fallen Star. That halberd is 100% metal in every way.
Linus (minifigurebuilds) revisits the much-prized Raven Knight of 2020’s collectible minifig series, giving him a crow-toped axe.
mediev_lego is a LEGO castle faction purist who expands on familiar crests with updated armament and flesh tones. They recently completed a full series based on the two new factions from the Minifigure Vending Machine. I selected a couple of the line with some clever custom weapon designs, starting with this Kraken spearman.
All of the builder’s Griffon faction are stupendous, but this knight takes the cake – cupcake, that is – with a clever mace design.
We close out this week’s roundup with a French builder better known on Flickr. Rémy (Rilbist) is a fantastic medieval builder who collaboratively builds out the Feodalis RPG setting. Here Rémy shares a pair of “figbarfs” based on two of the factions competing in the Feodalis tournament. First up, we have the team from House Whitetalon. Minifig hands work perfectly to identify the house colors on the jousting lance.
And they’ll be facing off against House Clawthorne (no relation to Ida the Owl Lady). Rémy calls it a figbarf, but the excellent decor and expressive posing makes this a build with worthy of a champion.
