Homer Simpson’s hard at “work” in Chris Adams perfect vignette of Sector 7G of the Springfield nuclear powerplant. The vibrant colors of the cartoon have been brought to life with LEGOs brilliant pastel colors – it looks just like the real thing. Simple yet sophisticated, the little touches like the box of donuts and the fire extinguisher all help to complete the scene. The control panel with its levers, dials and even a telephone looks great and I love how Chris has used the yellow and black bricked platform to mimic the lines on the security doors. When I first laid eyes on this, my brain refused to comprehend the crossover theme! Builder BrickinNick certainly accomplished his mission to put me in a daze. At first glance, I could see Chewbacca and Han Solo, but then something told me it was also Groot and his buddy Rocket Racoon. So is it a Groobacca and a Han Raccoon duo or a Chroot and a Rocket Solo team? You take your pick! I’m still bewildered and amazed. Actually, this amazing recreation of a gourmet dinner is made by a Russian builder (and cook!) Timofey Tkachev, but the “Danish influence” is unmistakable. All the food is very realistic, with many subtle detailing that reveals Timofey’s professional background. His favourite drink is also obvious from the amount of effort put into the beer bottle and glass. Although the concave shaping of a dinner plate is infamously hard to build in LEGO, but the builder cleverly solved the problem by making the plates “fancy”. There is a subtle detail in this creation, because when viewed from above, the scene spells the abbreviation of the Russian LUG (although in Cyrillic and very subtle, so not many casual viewers are likely to catch it). Builder Serge S does it yet again with a 5th variation on the original 10242 Creator Mini Cooper set. This time he’s used the very same parts to build a VW Golf MK1 Cabriolet. His previous alternate builds have included a mono-propellor plane, a Porsche and IVECO Truck, and a V10 Hot Rod. While the folks at Billund may be impressed, I’m sure they’d like to see fewer folks taking creativity to this level, as it’s going to sell a lot less boxed sets on the shelves with all this extended playability! In the 1970s a British television sci-fi show about an alien invasion of Earth called UFO was shown in the UK and Canada. It was created by Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson, who had previously made several successful children’s science fiction programmes, the most famous of which was Thunderbirds. Andrea Lattanzio‘s latest build is the show’s S.H.A.D.O. Moonbase Interceptor, the primary defence spacecraft of a highly secretive agency called Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defence Organisation or SHADO for short. Andrea has really captured the hull shaping and red stripe details of the Interceptors with their comical nose-mounted nuclear missiles. The Interceptor is instantly recognisable to those of a certain age ;-) Not content with just having the outward shaping, the cockpit and roof can be removed to show some interior details including control sticks, a comfy red pilot seat, and some powerful-looking engine areas. LEGO’s BrickHeadz sets seem to have triggered an avalanche of increasingly clever custom versions of late, and it’s all we can do just to keep up with these adorably super-deformed critters. Meanwhile in a parallel dimension, the significantly uglier REJECTZ line continues to grow… The male superheroes from my first collection desperately needed girlfriends, so I decided to give Disney Princesses the REJECTZ treatment. The World Peace Gate is a unique architectural element of Olympic Park in Seoul, South Korea, built for the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. Korean LEGO building team OliveSeon have recreated the arch in LEGO, complete with the colorful undersides of the “wings” extending outward from the top of the structure. The ground level of the park is no less detailed, with people walking through the park, enjoying the pools of water and bright pink flowers. The brick-built nurse is clear enough as LEGO, but the room created by Kirill Simerzin begs a closer examination. Overflowing with terrific details such as the slatted window blinds, IV drip, and power bed, you can almost hear the quiet beeping of medical devices in this rendered scene of an Intensive Care Unit. After an early tease of 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V last month, today LEGO has officially taken the wraps off this massive 1:110 scale rocket. First announced last June, the Saturn V will be the largest ever fan-designed LEGO Ideas set with 1,969 pieces, giving even the part count a nod to the year of mankind’s first steps on the moon. The rocket itself stands 39 in. tall (100cm), and consists of all three stages with a full complement of the lunar orbiter, lunar lander, command module with flotation devices, and three astronaut microfigures. The Saturn V will retail for $119.99 USD beginning June 1, the same day as the just-announced 10257 Carousel. The Saturn V is the first of two upcoming LEGO Ideas sets based on NASA, with a Women of NASA LEGO set coming later this year or early in 2018.
