I always knew LEGO could be sharp (underfoot), but this ship from Tim Goddard really shows off how sharp! There’s not a curve to be seen, outside of the canopy, on this interceptor, giving it the intended sharp-edged appearance. The ship looks like to could cut through anything as it speeds along on its mission. It possesses the style choices of the classic LEGO Space theme–always a welcome sight! Even the canopy is in the color scheme of the theme, but that’s not where it comes from… The canopy is the only curve in the build, and it comes from that most excellent Lightyear 76832 XL-15 Spaceship set. Seeing nature transformed into plastic bricks can be an amazing experience, and Maxx Davidson shows us just how it’s done with this 1:1 recreation of a Yellow Crowned Amazon. This green and yellow parrot has some gorgeous curves to it’s body, and some beautiful plumage to boot. I admit, though, that it was the 1×1 round bricks and “jumper stand” handles that form the talons that first caught my eye. It’s a neat solution that successfully mimics the real biology’s textures. While not a copy of the famed Two Towers from the Lord of the Rings novels, this dark castle from LEGO builder Poul-Erik Borre is exactly what every dark sorcerer needs. The symmetrical architecture immediately grabbed my attention, forcing my eyes up the highly-detailed stonework. I was impressed to see so many light lime-green bricks and dark-green bricks used as a contrasting colors against the black. The trees continue that same color palette. Looking more closely, I spotted a clever use of light lime-green hair pieces as all of the leaves and blossoms. What I also didn’t realize at first was that there are actually three towers, not just two. A truly impressive fantasy creation. Luke Skywalker was dedicated to getting his friends back at all costs. Star Wars fans share in that dedication when constructing their detailed reproductions of scenes from the series. Here, Anthony shows us an excellent slice of Jabba’s Palace from an iconic scene in the Return of the Jedi. The detailing captures the throne room well and I love the bottles with spilled liquid along the edges of the display. I also enjoy how Anthony decided to portray the scene. On top of the notable characters, the builder staged the display at a great scale and in a way that evokes some emotion. Having Luke’s back to the viewer helps us imagine that we are in Luke’s place, facing down a wretched scumlord holding our friends captive. Paired with the dramatic irony of knowing what’s in store for our hero, I think it helps add a feeling to the model that...

We like supercars as much as anyone else, but there’s something equally cool about vintage rides like this Volvo 240 estate by Jonathan Elliott (JE Brickworks). I mean, you’re in for a world of hurt if you try and move a couch on the roof of your Lamborghini. A model that deserves a closer look, this blue beauty has a tilted minifigure ice skate for the Volvo logo and particularly clever use of steering wheels for wheel rims. As a builder, I always strive to push the limits of LEGO building, with techniques and parts usage. Combined with my arts and design training, I’ve spent years studying elements and how they fit together. Despite my self-declared expertise, there will always be creations that just stump me. Especially small ones. Especially small ones built by my friend Tom Loftus (Inthert). I first saw this spindly teal-and-white spaceship in person when we displayed creations together at the last English LEGO exhibitions before the COVID shit hit the fan. He explained to me in great detail how he built this small ship. He even took it apart and showed me an in-depth breakdown of how he built it. I didn’t understand a single thing. It’s like his builds have an IQ-lowering effect on me. Even two years later, after more and more breakdowns via calls and messages, I still don’t understand it....

LEGO just unveiled the latest adult playset from Star Wars featuring Darth Vader’s Meditation Chamber. The set comes with 663 pieces, a Darth Vader and General Veers minifigure. The set is available for preorder now (limit of 2 pieces per order) and retailing at US $69.99 | CAN $99.99 | UK £59.99 and will ship on August 1st 2021.
