LEGO Education and FIRST unveil RePLAY, the new FIRST LEGO League season theme [News]

Today, LEGO announced the new theme for the upcoming FIRST LEGO League season as well as two new sets for new program divisions. FIRST LEGO League is an international, teacher-led robotics program designed to introduce children to STEM principles. The 2020-2021 season is going to be all about RePLAY, while the program structure will be simplified. From now on the competitions will be held across three divisions: Challenge (ages 9-14), Explore (ages 6-10), and Discover (ages 4-6). Team registration for all three age divisions will now be open for the season launching on August 4, 2020. Unlike the last year’s architecture-themed season, the new competitions will focus on tasks related to health, sports, and fitness. Once again, students will be tasked with completing a challenge designed in partnership with a panel of experts using a variety of LEGO Education products, including LEGO Education WeDo 2.0, LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3, and the...

A mammoth microscale mech

LEGO mechs come in all shapes and sizes. From stompy to stealthy, from massive to minuscule, and everything in between. This 6-legged mech by Oscar Cederwall was inspired by the latest craze in mech-building, which comes in the form of a design constraint introduced by Andrew Lee where the mech must be shorter than 9 bricks. This mech stands on its own, with some great part usages, including a number of minifig cabinet doors attached by inserting the handle into various parts. The leg joint made up of the tops of a turntable provides great details, and don’t miss the blue Modulex elements as supply crates. I do appreciate the subtle inclusion of a 9-brick radio tower, and I really like the base made with a variety of sloped and curved bricks built sideways. Behind the scenes of LEGO Monkie Kid [News]

Earlier today, LEGO revealed Monkie Kid, a brand new theme based on the Chinese Monkey King fable. The new theme includes eight sets and an animated television series. Along with all the information about the new sets, LEGO also sent us a gallery of photos showing a behind-the-scenes look at the development process of the new product line. Familiar faces include LEGO designers Justin Ramsden (Hogwarts Castle, The Upside Down), Nick Vas (Ninjago City), Chris Perron (1989 Batmobile), Simon Lucas (Ninjago Movie), and more. As a refresher, here is a short trailer for the TV series announced along with the sets. (Full trailer can be viewed here.) During the Chinese launch event, LEGO showed a video highlighting the design process from creating the Monkie Kid theme to building the sets and testing them with kids. The following gallery comes from that video. LEGO also shared fact sheets about three of the...

LEGO Ideas LEGO HeroQuest Achieves 10,000 Supporters

The Lego HeroQuest is the latest project to achieve 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas. It is based on a popular board game from the 90s and it is a recreation of the original one within the 3,000 part limit. I’m not too familiar with the game but it does include a lot of minifigures to represent the characters. It now joins The Mountain Windmill and Community – Greendale Community College as the projects to reach the Second 2020 Review Stage.
