Best-in-Class: A Vic Viper Valedictorian

Some LEGO creations are brilliant replicas—smaller models of things we’ve seen (or wish we’ve seen, like a castle) filled with lovely colors and clever parts uses. Other builds are insanely creative—wild spaceships or fantasy creatures pushing the envelope. And then there is this creation from Maxx Davidson (Flickr), that has combined both of these worlds together. This creation is not just ready to slice through space but is also eager to attack the school year with a full supply of highlighters, lined paper, and a pair of rulers! The spaceship is pretty much a pun made into a 3D reality, so it seems fitting for it to be named The Bic Viper. “Some young explorers doodle when they daydream, some go a step above,” Maxx said in the description. It’s safe to say that he certainly went a step above. There is so much to love about this build, from the...

Orcs Unleashed: Releasing the Horde from Orctober's MOC Contest

There probably has been no better time to be in the LEGO MOC building community than right now when in comes to finding a building contest or activity to participate in. Each new month brings us another series of inspiring building prompts. Some of them have become annual traditions, arriving like seasons of the year. Others challenge us to build in areas that have yet to be explored. We compile a comprehensive list of these LEGO contests to help you find the ones that best fit your interests or may provide you with a creative spark to try something new. …And occasionally, we also have a contest idea of our own to add to that list. First orc I built, which ended up as a trophy prize for the contest. How Orctober Was Born Sometime last summer, I was chatting with my friend Alex from BricksLog (a LEGO-related website for the...

The LEGO Color Palette: 2023 Edition

Best of BrickNerd — Article originally published Jan. 24, 2023 and updated on Jan. 14, 2024. In 2016, The LEGO Group published its colour palette listing all the moulding colours in production. Seven years on, and with no sign of an updated palette being released, I thought it would be a nice exercise to update the 2016 palette for all the new colours released since then. Additionally, I’m going to re-organise the colours into families, mainly to appease my OCD for understanding the world by organising it!     © The Lego Group Some terminology before we begin. I am going to use BrickLink colour names as they are simpler while also being more widely used across the community. And apologies to our American readers, but I am going to spell ‘Colour’ and ‘Grey’ in the Oxford (and The LEGO Group) tradition. This is a long article, so if you want to...

All that talent down the drain

In a LEGO world of castles, mechs, and spaceships it’s neat when someone with the amusing name of Pistash comes along and builds something totally ordinary. A golden faucet is an ordinary thing if you happen to be in a higher tax bracket than most, but you get what I mean. The smooth porcelain of the sink and even the water splatter effects are all amazing touches. I even love the gold wheel rim used as the drain. It was built for the Iron Forge competition over at, well, Iron Forge. We’ve been amazed with this builder’s work before. Check out our Pistash archives to see what I mean. 900 years to wear down a temple, 7 days to build it out of LEGO

The proficiency of LEGO builders never ceases to amaze me. Timothy Shortell (AKA Classical Bricks) tells a story of coming across a photo of the Ta Prohm temple in Cambodia. A week goes by, and boom – we get this amazing model at the end of it. That’s no time at all! Just the careful positioning of the roof tiles for that jungle-weathered temple look must have taken a good while. In fact, all the weathering is very well judged, and the tree roots winding their way down to the ground – very nicely done. It’s almost unfair how quickly this was all achieved. When I build for a week, I’m lucky if I’ve even got a half-finished model at the end of it, let alone one as good as this!
