Making magic with mind-bending custom minfigs [Minifig Monday]

Placeholder Image

Last week’s grab bag installment of Minifig Monday was a lot of fun, but today we return to themed roundups. Specifically, we’re looking at wizards and warlocks and their sorcerous kindred – but the real magic is in the creative use of parts to push the boundaries of minifig creation!

We start this magical Monday collection with a character who is barely a wizard at all – Rincewind from the Discworld novels. As created by legendary minifig photographer Jez Rider, Rincewind is accompanied by The Luggage and a definitely-not-stolen sheep.

Custom minifigs represent! This incredible Wicked duo from LEGO Masters winner Ian Summers (bricktacular_builds) is currently in the LEGO House Masterpiece Gallery, and might be the smallest build to get that honor. The parts usage is mind-blowing, especially the backwards arms, Glinda’s teapot body, and a beard for Elphaba’s broom. I had the chance to speak with Ian at LEGO House and he’s a fan of Minifig Monday and the creations shared here.

Backwards arms? Redbirch ups the ante with legs for arms! The builder has only shared 11 MOCs so far, but they’ve already made Minifig Monday twice with some of the most innovative parts usage we’ve seen. Look at those extended legs, made by slotting a minifig hand into the leg hole.  The handlebar shoulder armor is great too.

Aris (bricks.for_bricks) also finds innovative way to extend the minifig body for this rainforest death cult shaman. The Lady of Pain’s headpiece makes a fitting hat. Excellent stone statues accompany thee figure.

Sword Bricks‘ Necrobanancer (thanks, Dunesplained, for the pun!) offers a tryptic of images of what happens when a magical monkey let’s his greed get the better of him.

_bricktorious_ takes a break from the Samurai Showdown to create the Wraithlord of Forgotten Souls. As if that name wasn’t metal enough, he wields the Orb of Doom. The smiling ghosts and Nexo Knight rock dudes aren’t quite as terrifying as the Wraithlord, but any good lich knows you bring doom with the army you have.

Ghostsummoner

Enough doom and glooom! ASortaOkayBuilder bloomss with a druid from the circle of petals, drawn from the Obojima: Tales from the Grass RPG setting. The builder’s adorable petal spirit is inspired by axolotls and tardigrades.

CircleOfPetalsDruid

argoniinbricks puts a Lovecraftian spin on the CMF series 13 alien head. This guy is so perfect, he would be right at home as a CMF figure!

Slimesummoner

Alessandro Zappalà (legozampa) finds inspiration working with brick yellow and tan. That Chima elephant head pairs surprisingly well with Sandman’s lower half, and the builder uses his signature trick of combining multiple wings for an epic presence.

Shulika_27 also plays with a a limited palette for this ice-flavored antihero, the Azure Ball. I love the mix of trans light blue elements used to create the chilling flying platform.

Brick.roll20, as you might guess from the handle, specializes in D&D character builds. Velymaris, the Fallen draws on some great Nexo Knight parts, but its pairing with the purple hair from Elves that really pushes the design to the top.

Velymaris

You’ll never be spored when zakar.ion‘s Eukaryotic Shaman is around – he’s a really fun guy! Tall crowns provide perfect toes. Amazing colors.

SporeShaman

Next up a collab with the prompt “Warlock.” fish.buckle comes in with this incredible character cloaked in black. The tire collar is brilliant, as is the round cauldron on the back with that beautiful serpentine smoke coming out.

FishbuckeWarlock

Fish’s collaborator in Minifig Monday regular Amorphous Bricks who answers with Veloria the warlock and Fizzle, her cheese loving imp helper. The builder pushes into a new-to-them style with a retro aesthetic similar to Fish’s creations and the results are spectacular. I especially like the imp’s vintage face.

AmorphousWarlock

Linus (MinifigureBuilds) creates a cozy character – someone who loves animals so much he binds their souls to return them to life! Nice use of a hot dog for a prosthetic arm, professor Varnok.

Minifigurebuilds Beasts

Dorian A. H. MacQuarrie casts a spell with Druingorm, prophet of the Wild. The mask from Black Panther is perfectly employed, but it’s that scary banner that makes this figure stand out.

Druingorm

Finally, artist_davs humbled us with his incredible Miyamoto Musashi. Now he’s back with another incredible small-scale character, the Tamisran. I’ll let the artist describe:

The Tamisran is not a sight, but a scar on the soundscape. It begins as a low hum, a tiny imperfection in the silence that most people would write off as ambient noise. But for the afflicted, this hum blossoms into a malevolent whisper, a language twisted into a perverse dialect of their own. It murmurs your name with a wet, familiar intimacy, revealing your most guarded secret and the time of your death in the same breath. The terror is a question: are you hearing the Tamisran, or is your own mind creating the unraveling with each promise of a silent, painless end?

ArtistDavsNecromancer

The spell is cast, now we must go. If you enjoy Minifig Mondays, please give a follow to the creators featured and send them a kind word.
