Mythical Monsters and Belligerent Behemoths: Round 1 Results of Bio-Cup 2025

Mythical Monsters and Belligerent Behemoths: Round 1 Results of Bio-Cup 2025

A few weeks back, we looked over the preliminary round for Bio-Cup 2025, and today we’ll take a peek at the results of Round 1. It was quite a turnout indeed!

Round1

The theme for Round 1 was Mythic Beasts with 16 sub-categories. Get your bestiary ready, we’re gonna see if we can tame the monsters from each category!

DRAGON: The Ceremony

Hlebo Bas went with a really bold color scheme and a brilliant concept; it really paid off! A monster sacrificing someone to appease his dragon deity! The sacrificial platform uses the lid from a Piraka set turned around—even LEGO packaging is useful, eh?

Dragon

Poor lil guy

Onto the monster, notice his teeth? Vidiyo box clips! Crazy, eh? The dragon god creature has an extremely intricate head design, incorporating numerous wacky elements. On the sides of its head, there are some Ben 10 Swampfire heads sandwiching some red big fig arms. As for the eyes, he’s used El Fuego’s helmet from Hidden Side. The sand-green headdress centers around the Lady of Pain’s mask from the Dungeons & Dragons Minfigure series.

GARGOYLE: Mahou Shoujo Gargoyle-chan

I naively thought I’d seen everything. But a Magical Girl Gargoyle? Extraordinary. Magmafrost13 came up with an extremely outlandish design… and I absolutely adore it! Clikits have a soft spot in my heart, especially the little hearts. You see Clikits icons used here and there, but you don’t often see icon accents.

Gargoyle

Kawaii

I love how the dress uses the large figure shoulder/botanical petal elements in conjunction with some Kohrak shields—its got a great poofy shape. The gargoyle’s ears use Star Wars capes, and the eyebrows consist of Ninjago snakes. If I needed a magical girl to save me, I’d go with this Gargoyle 11 times out of 10.

LICH/UNDEAD/NECROMANCER: Blasphemous Ritual

Care Creations has been killing it lately with all kinds of whimsically wacky builds. This Bio-Cup build is no exception. Why does the necromancer have his organs in a green bubble on his torso? It doesn’t matter—it’s just plain cool!

Blasphemous Ritual

nECRODANCER?

For a head, Care used a Kraata canister lid. It’s simple, but extremely effective. The Matoran Script details on the lid add a little extra eldritch horror vibes. The cape comes from Construct-a-Zurg and the skirt/robes come from the large-scale Harry Potter minifigures. Similar to Joey Klusnick’s Dreamcatcher Mechaspider, the pentagram uses a string/cord to form the shape.

SCARAB/INSECTOID: Archival Auditor

This was my category, and I went big. This beast is about the size of my cat, who knocked it over more than once. I knew I couldn’t beat The Maestro’s build, Acidito, so I went for maximum whimsey!.

Archival Auditor Bettter

Spoopy

I’m known for using large wacky elements, and this is no exception. For the abdomen, I used an elephant body which conveniently has a Galidor connection in the neck joint! I used some gigantic shock absorbers for the legs, along with some rotation arms attached to the Galidor connector.

Cat Tax

Cat tax…He’s a doofus

GOLEM: CHARCOAL DESTROYER

Lord Donkey created a very clean build—a golem made of charcoal. While it’s really simple at first glance, you’ll notice he’s got some nice inverted tires to cover all the gaps around the joints.

CHARCOAL DESTROYER

Burn baby burn

To indicate its fiery nature, the golem has flames coming out of his torso, knees and elbows. Croissant eyebrows add some extra flavor, too!

TROLL/GOBLIN/ORC: Goblin Raid Gang

Eero Okkonen is back to his usual antics, building the best characters in the whole LEGO community. He’s built a trio of goblin raiders, with crazy part usages all throughout.

Goblins 2

three for the price of one!

Leaves, Vidiyo handles, barrels, Barraki feet… NPU oozing from the seams. I’ll let you look at his blog for more information—he goes in-depth for each build and I can’t really do it justice here.

MINOTAUR/CENTAUR: The Centaur with No Name

HBbluetooth went with a cowboy-themed centaur, which is an objectively fantastic concept! For a poncho, he used a Boba Fett Pauldron.

CENTAUR

nO HORSING AROUND IN MY TOWN

Notice the funky gray piece used for his shirt? It’s a spring-powered cannon piece! Like the rock usage in the background? It’s a Power Miners Rock Monster arm!

ELEMENTAL: Tinderdance

Mitch Henry went with a fire elemental. His posing really gives a feel of motion. For the limbs, he’s combined Chima Fire and Hero Factory Flame elements.

Elementakl

Danve til the flames burn out

I miss the old fire element with the peg connection where you could chain them together like the spiral on the floor here.

CHIMERA: Amalgam

VelociJACKtor built Amalgam, an amalgamation of a bunch of creatures. A snake mouth on the tip of the tail, bovine hooves on the back legs and carnivoran claws on the front legs. For the head, he’s used an inverted Ninjago dragon bottom jaw with some dino tails wrapped around a purple Kraata tongue.

Chimaera

not dead, not alive

For a spinal chord, there are two flexible hoses shoved between some funky Technic liftarms. Notice the upper back has blue and red Technic pins? Those match the hoses! Brilliant.

DJINN: Karub the Engulved

Just like his giant Piraka build for Bio-Cup 2024, Darknova3529 went big! Chima constraction axe blades combined with Hero Factory wings create an intricate mask, hiding the djinn’s mystical face.

Djinn

I wish i had this dude’s abs

A pair of gold Ninjago Spinjitzu elements wrapped around 3x3 corner bricks creates an eye-like symbol on its chest. I’m not sure what Karub is holding in his left hand, but the Zamor sphere helix effect is really cool.

VAMPIRE: Vampire Bat

TotalMaddness built one of the tallest Bionicle builds I’ve ever seen! She used sails from Queen Anne’s Revenge, which was really ambitious but paid off immensely. It’s roughly 50 studs tall, which is an impressive feat to make within two weeks.

Vampire

Don’t let her in, even if she asks nicely

The shaping all over is immaculate. I particularly love the Nuparu armor pieces used in the torso and the Galidor shield pieces used for the ears. A Rahkshi head makes an awesome jaw, using the eye holes for nostrils is quite clever.

GHOST/WRAITH: King’s Warden

GiiKei came up with a ghastly apparition, resembling some sort of undead warrior. For a censer/candle, they used a Knight’s Kingdom crown with a Hero Factory head hanging from the bottom.

Haunting the halls forevermore

The figure itself has a crown using a Barraki Spine mounted on a Mahri inner mask. Trans-light blue elements represent its ethereal form, to great effect.

SEA MONSTER/KRAKEN: A Beast Rises From The Depths

Gnarlic Bread’s sea monster looks a bit like an Opee Sea Killer from The Phantom Menace. I like the dark red and dark bluish gray color scheme, especially on the top, where he’s used Pteranodon wings.

54602294749 52d0d8b3a0 K

A yellow Komau Kanohi mask mounted above a pair of yellow sea scooters makes a great Aquanaut submarine. The torso uses a bunch of small Bionicle limbs to make an interesting texture.

MERFOLK: Poivrons

When I think of merfolk, I usually imagine a fish/human hybrid. Joe Swansus instead built a cephalopod-inspired merfolk. For the head, he used a Star Wars constraction torso, along with a bunch of 2x2 elbow/macaroni bricks for tentacles.

Merfolk

Squidfolk???

Octopi famously have bizarrely shaped eyes, so a pair of small antenna lever bases work perfectly. Fun critter—I wish I’d built it!

PHOENIX/THUNDERBIRD: Phoenician Firebird

mSquid_ designed a lovely firebird, with an awesome volcanic color scheme. While feather elements are expected for a bird’s wing, Chima minifigure wings look fantastic, especially with the orange contrasting against the black and dark red.

54607996508 D61e0eaaea H

pTERANODON VIBES

For the lower legs, he used Ninjago dragon horns that taper down from 2x2 to 1x1. I can totally imagine this bird erupting into flames—the colors work really well together.

NYMPH/FOREST SPRITE: Kodama

Based on Japanese tree spirits, DanielBrickSon built a Kodama. Dark green dragon wings mixed with some matching Technic panels look like a robe, and yet it might still be part of the spirit itself.

54606067917 6de9e253d7 H

She speaks for the trees

Trans-blue spider limbs with some flowers mounded on top make it feel slightly alien, appropriate for a spirit. If you recognize its head but can’t quite place it, Kodama appears in Princess Mononoke.

Heading Into Round 2

With the completion of Round 1, all the builders who’ve passed onto the next round are frantically building for Round 2. They’ve been tasked with building something inspired by the suits in a standard 52-card deck: Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades.

IMG 3720

I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
