LEGO VIP 5007093 – 1950’s Logo Spinning Keychain – Better than a tin sign [Review]

We’ve seen some real ups and downs in the quality of “Collectible” VIP rewards from LEGO. Yet, for some reason, I keep spending my points on all of them. My latest acquisition is LEGO VIP 5007093 – 1950’s Logo Spinning Keychain. It’s available now for 950 points from the VIP rewards center (US | CAN | UK ). Unboxing. (Unsleeving? Is that even a word?)

The keychain arrives in a 3″/7.6cm paper envelope. The front has the LEGO and VIP logos, and the product name. The back has a UPC code, a spooky warning (Ages 3+ only, and please retain for future reference) and manufacturer info. It was made by RDP Ltd, the same company behind the collectible coins and tins.

Inside the envelope is (GASP) the keychain. Unlike the coins and other RDP products, there’s no tissue paper to cushion the item or prevent scratching.

The Keychain

The keychain’s outer body is just over 1.5″/4 cm in diameter. The central disk is double sided with the same 1950’s LEGO logo in the center, with “‘Billund, Danmark” around the rim. The badge uses the same enamel coating that the VIP Coins have to add color. And, just like the coins, the quality of the enamel is just so-so. There are some bubbles and imperfections on both sides.

The “play feature” of the spinning center disk works pretty well right out of the package, but I don’t want to make a guess how well it’ll stand up to long-term use. At one-per-VIP-account, this one is going into my collection, rather than my pocket, anyway.

Size comparison with the Collectible Coins

Since this keychain uses the same enameling process as the VIP Coins, I wondered if the center coin was actually a “secret” bonus coin. At first glance , you can see that the logo part is much smaller, but the whole assembly is pretty similar in size.

But a direct comparison shows that it’s still smaller than the coins. Does this mean anything? No, not really. But I had to find something to stretch this review out a little bit.

Conclusion and recommendation

Well, here we are. At the end of another VIP Rewards review. And, you know, this time I’m pretty happy with what I got for my points. It’s a pretty nice little keychain. If it weren’t a one-per-VIP account item I might have picked up a second one and, you know, actually put keys on it. Looking at the selection at the LEGO shop, I guess there is a decent demand for LEGO keychains. But, like the other attempts at “VIP Collectibles”, this is likely to be pretty hit-or-miss with LEGO fans. Where do you fall on this one? Going to pick one up while you can?
