The Brothers Brick LEGO Creation of the Year 2020 [News]
If it was tricky enough to put together a shortlist of the best LEGO creations of 2020, but narrowing it down to a single “best model” proved even harder. Every model on the shortlist was excellent, and there was much debate amongst the team. However, after a great deal of discussion, The Brothers Brick is delighted to announce Koen Zwanenburg‘s Tutankhamun Mask as our LEGO Creation of the Year 2020.
The mask is a beautiful piece of LEGO sculpture, employing a wide variety of parts to create all the shapes required — Bionicle and Hero Factory pieces used in the face, a bewildering range of bricks in Pearl Gold, a Technic frame within the stand, and stunning use of dinosaur tail parts to create the curved stripes of the headdress.
The model shows staggering attention to detail, from the shaping of the face, the capture of the hieroglyph patterns on the cowl, and the images Koen chose to built into the base, adding wonderful texture to what could have easily been left as a blank supporting piece.
The mask is currently on display alongside real treasures from Ancient Egypt in the Dutch Museum of Antiquities — a suitable recognition of the creativity, eight months work, and around 16,000 pieces which went into building this stunning model. It stands 54cm tall (excluding the stand), 39cm wide, and 49cm deep — matching the proportions of its real-life inspiration. However, numbers can never tell the whole story, so here’s a picture of Koen himself working on the model, which gives a clearer idea of the significant scale of his creation…
Tutankhamun’s Mask is an incredible LEGO model. It’s not just big, it’s also a wonderfully detailed depiction of one of the most famous objects in the world. It’s packed with great parts choices and is a masterpiece of sculpting. That’s why the team at The Brothers Brick picked it as our LEGO Creation of the Year 2020.
