The monastery is built from a distinctive mix of flame yellowish orange, medium lilac, sand green, and brick yellow. It’s a color combination I’ve never encountered before but really sings, especially paired with fall foliage. Tabaya’s model is filled with playful architectural choices, influenced, no doubt, by limited parts in the chosen colors. But the builder also celebrates the playful connections possible in LEGO without the constraints of historical accuracy or realism. Sometimes those bright red toadstools appear out of nowhere and you’re like, what otherworldly thing is this? Maybe LEGO creature builder extraordinaire Joss Ivanwood feels the same way when he discovers a toadstool. He’s been building a dragon a month for a long while now and September’s offering is called Draconis Amanita and is inspired by the fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria). He tells us he’s always been fascinated by the way so many mushrooms grow from fallen trees, giving them new life. So, he fathomed it would be a cool idea to make the whole dragon as a group of mushrooms growing out of the same log. I bet this dragon’s mycelium network is off the hook! LEGO vehicle phenom Isaac Wilder says it’s been a while since he had last built a bike but you wouldn’t know it by the display of talent here. Relearning an old skill like building a bike is like- um -riding a bike; you never forget how to do it, even after a hiatus. He tells us the front fender is a wand sprue that he had bent a little, while the white tires are stretched Scala wheels. The result is -I mean- just look at that stance! What’s gray and white and red all over? This build by Mark van Der Maarel. The dramatic simplicity of its colors is striking enough, but the red house nevertheless also contains a variety of textures that keep it interesting: flippers mounted on walls for little architectural flourishes, Technic pins protruding from walls, and 1×2 ribbed bricks stacked atop each other, to name a few. The bright color and details of the building contrast starkly with the blank gray figure painting it. It begs the question: what happens when the creation is more vivid than its creator? I was enthralled when I saw this new Fall Owl by LEGO extraordinaire Andreas Leander and now you can be too. I mean, look at those textures and details! What’s not to love? I’m particularly fond of the lavender flowers that comprise the textures of its face. The tree-shaped stand and the wings made of dinosaur horns are not without their charms. I had a lovely owl visit my yard about once a week for a while right up until I shined a light in its face. Then I never saw it again, unfortunately, and now I wonder if I was directly responsible for its relocation. Wherever you’ve moved to, Mr. (or Ms.) Owl, I hope you’re eating well. For the second time this year, LEGO store shelves will see a massive new set in the Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series line. In this 25th year of the theme, October will bring LEGO Star Wars 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge UCS, complete with 11 minifigures which include Jabba, Bib Fortuna, Princess Leia, Salacious Crumb, and Max Rebo. The land barge has a fully detailed interior for recreating all those great scenes from Return of the Jedi, and sits at over 30 inches long (77 cm). Thanks to the newly-released Dungeons and Dragons Collectible Minifigures, filling out your LEGO scenes with fantasy races and epic loot is easier than ever.  Kamil Karpiński picked up a couple of Aarakocrans (aka birdfolk, aka “Jarnathan”) and using just 13 tiny elements built new legs to amplify their avian qualities. As wings and quivers clash, Kamil gives his ranger a hip solution. Kamil’s fantasy-focused creations show how even minifigures can become the foundation for clever building techniques. What do Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture, and a brave Wookiee warrior have in common? More than you think. Take this visually arresting build by JustAnotherTFOL, which gets the award for the best use of Chewbacca legs since . . . well, Chewbacca’s legs. The parts from the buildable Chewbacca figure make a great tree trunk. But the great parts usage doesn’t end there. The golden curl piece gets to shine as both the vine that grows around the column and her curly hair. It all flows together organically, which is a good look for a goddess like Demeter.
