There are few monsters in the history of movies that strike more terror in audiences and fans than the Queen Xenomorph imagined by James Cameron in the movie Aliens. Here at TBB we have featured many LEGO xenomorphs in the past, but in my opinion, this Queen by Manufactura Jarema is one of the best, most detailed queen models I have ever seen. There are so many details that are worth mentioning. For one, the use of two black clip elements used to create the tapering barbs on the flexible tail. Also, the hinge piece on the arms is the perfect part for making thin yet posable limbs. Besides the many wonderful details in the Queen herself, the stand which contains great environmental structure also features another hero of this model, the Facehugger! Many people use LEGO building as a form of meditation, but not quite as many use LEGO to literally build meditation. Andreas Lenander definitely uses it at least for the latter — that we can be sure of. The build is very atmospheric, but secretly, it is also quite technical in its construction. The Journey represents an old traveler crossing a bridge amongst blooming trees. The surrounding landscape is not bad, but the bridge is really the impressive part. The railing uses Elves fence pieces with a well-known curve technique. The bridge itself is just stacked plates carefully curved to follow the railing’s curvature – a construction that seems very unstable, but Andreas says that it actually holds together quite well. It’s looking more and more like each LEGO theme will be getting the BrickHeadz treatment, with the reveal today of the first official box art and product photos of the BrickHeadz from the next installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (due in theaters this June). Following the combo-pack release of two characters in a single set we first saw with 41489 Rey & Kylo Ren last year, 41614 Owen & Blue features the protagonist played by Chris Pratt alongside a brick-built CGI dinosaur. The set includes 234 pieces, and we’ll bring you an update when we have a firm release date and price. Blue is the first non-humanoid character released as a BrickHeadz (even the seasonal BrickHeadz like the Valentine’s Day Bee and Easter Rabbit are fairly anthropomorphic), so it will be interesting to see how LEGO recreates other animals and creatures in the future. Sometimes the simple details on a LEGO model are the most interesting. Take this spiffy spaceship by Jme Wheeler, for example. Those smoothly curving fins are the centerpiece of this stylish creation. In addition to all the curvy bits in all directions, the gold details on the engine, and that macaroni pipe around the cockpit are great details. We’re beginning to wind down our reviews of the first 2018 wave of LEGO Speed Champions, and today we take a closer look at another Ford racecar, 75885 Ford Fiesta M-Sport WRC. The Ford Fiesta retails for $14.99, with 203 pieces and a minifig driver. The LEGO car depicts a 2017 Ford Fiesta kitted out for World Rally Championship racing, in M-Sport team livery. The box, instructions, & sticker sheet Like other single-car sets in the Speed Champions line, the car comes in several unnumbered bags inside a small cardboard box. The back of the box showcases the car’s play features (such as they are for such a small set, and we’ll cover them when discussing the finished model later in the review) along with a photo of the real racecar. Most of us are familiar with princesses kissing frogs in fairytales to save their beloved from a curse, but this build by Revan New introduced me to a different, unique story, in which the girl is tasked by a sorcerer to guess her lover amongst four of the sorcerer’s apprentices, turned into ravens. The creation is not a perfectly “realistic” recreation of the fairytale scene, as Revan adds expressive, artistic accents to the build. The snow on the edges of the beautifully constructed walls seems to have little logical relation to the scene itself, instead capturing the atmosphere and emotional aspects of the story. A few splashes of brown help to break up the build colour-wise without making it inapropriately cheerful, and the window is especially well integrated into the wall. When it comes to building a great LEGO narrative, the right signature element can really set the scene. Take this delightful flying submarine scene by Yang Wang for example. The tall, skinny, chibi-style fuselage with that perfectly rounded canopy creates a unique and fun vehicle. The working tilt rotors make this airship/submersible complete. Here in this closeup of the vehicle, we see more great details, like the pin-up girl commonly associated with fighter planes from World War 2, the clean yellow stripe, and the rotors swiveled down in flight mode. We’ve featured Sarah Beyer‘s tropical holiday home LEGO models in the past, but this latest creation takes her architectural style and moves it out of the jungle and onto the beach. This Tahiti-inspired holiday hut is a delight — a showcase of effective texturing, nice landscaping, and cool water effects. It’s worth diving-in to take a closer look at some of the details, like the path towards the veranda with its mix of stones and plants… And don’t miss the water, with layered transparent tiles creating a wonderful shoreline effect… The hut itself boasts a detailed interior, packed with Sarah’s trademark attention to detail, and — as ever — photographed brilliantly… In short, this is a lovely LEGO model — one I wish I could visit on holiday!
