A while ago I wrote that I feel that my Lego models keep getting more complicated due to new parts and new techniques, while building something small and simple can be a lot more fun. The flip side is that those parts and techniques allow building things I could not have built years ago. Case in point: my new combine harvester transport. For years I mainly built larger-scale models, in part because I struggled to build a recognizable make and model of the vehicle at a scale suitable for Lego minifigures. Despite new parts, it still is not particularly easy. This is one of the reasons why even Lego’s own designers resort to using stickers for the cars in the Speed Champions range, for instance. And those are pretty complicated, certainly for sets. Furthermore, their scale really stretches the definition of what is suitable for minifigures. Of course, I could have...

Famously, stepping on LEGO is one of the most painful experiences known to humankind, second only to stubbing your little toe. (Woe betide you if you stub your little toe on a LEGO creation.) But what does stepping in LEGO feel like? We should ask Takamichi Irie. He has made the bold choice of creating a red Nike sneaker out of bricks. They say you need to suffer for your art, but even so, it’s a brave builder who willingly makes something where you’re always stepping on studs! Thankfully for Takamichi’s feet – or one of them, at least – he has got a normal shoe to complete the pair. And to be fair, the brick-built one does compare very well to it! It’s so well shaped, it actually looks kind of comfy. And you wouldn’t need to worry about finding one in your size: you can always build it a...

Your first thought of dragons, wyrms and wyverns might be scary mythical beasts. But with adept use of his LEGO pieces, Joey Klusnick reminds us that dragons have feelings, too. It’s named the Weeping Wyvern – clearly named after its resemblance to weeping willows. But the poor guy is actually weeping! But why? There is a missing goat poster pinned to its left ankle. Perhaps someone used too big a nail, or the goat is this wyvern’s pet? It’s anyone’s guess, really. The only other plausible explanation is that it’s seen the eye-watering prices of the original goat on the LEGO aftermarket… The post What woes will this willowy wyvern to weep? appeared first on The Brothers Brick. Take some asteroids, throw in a pinch of alien viruses, stir it all up with a laser beam, and what do you get? Deoxys the Pokemon! Add some plastic to the mix and you get this fantastic LEGO model by Dylan Mievis. This Pokemon’s signature loopy DNA arms are made of 45-degree elbow bricks. I really love the exciting chunkiness of this models face, made with a pair of orange 1×3 arches and 4 curved corners The post LEGO Deoxys, I choose you appeared first on The Brothers Brick. In case it escaped your attention, this year is a leap year. That means we got a whole extra day of the LEGO community’s month-long rover-building bonanza: Febrovery! And boy, has Scott Wilhelm made good use of that bonus day. At 117 studs long, this colossal rover would almost qualify for that other famous space-building monthly challenge, SHIPtember (it just needs to swap those wheels for wings). Since it’s built for exploring, let’s do some exploring of our own and find out what Scott has hidden inside this behemoth. (Spoiler alert: a lot!) Before we go inside, let’s take a look around the back. We can see the crew hard at work loading some supplies with an enormous crane mounted to the rear. The interior is fully kitted out, too. The cockpit (or bridge? I guess this feels big enough to be called the bridge!) is awesomely shaped on the outside,...

Our final kit on the March 1st released Technic sets list is the LEGO Technic 42170 Kawasaki Ninja H2R. While it’s being reviewed last, it’s certainly not the least interesting of the bunch. LEGO motorcycle fans will be keen to learn whether or not this 643-piece Ninja is worthy of their shelf space. So join us as we take a closer look at the model, which is available now and currently retails for US $84.99 | CAN $109.99 | UK £69.99. The LEGO Group sent The Brothers Brick a copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews. Unboxing the parts, instructions, and sticker sheet The front of the box is pretty standard fare, while the back shows a few different angles and examples of the play features. There is also an image of the real bike next to some stats about...

Seeking their fortunes across the stars, this renegade band of LEGO rapscallions aren’t just smugglers. They’re full-on space pirates, at least according to builder Librarian-Bot. Inspired by the 1993 set 6268 Renegade Runner, this creation was inspired by the “Space Pirates – Back to the Caribbean Galaxy” competition happening over at Eurobricks. The ship’s sail has been transformed into a large beveled wing, still striped in black and white. A large rocket engine has been added to the schooner’s aft section, and the large cannon mounted below the ship looks devastating! From this shot, you can appreciate those magnificent engines and the minifigures at the helm. The mech suits are wonderful, striped just like the pirate minifig shirts of the crew from the original Renegade Runner. But the customized pirate-y spacesuits on those figs are wonderful as well. I’m looking forward to more entries to this interesting contest hitting the internet...

We’re finally wrapping up our reviews of the March 1st wave of Technic sets. Next on the list is the 452-piece LEGO Technic 42169 NEOM McLaren Formula E Team race car. Compared to the other sets in the wave, this guy is pretty little! But retailing for US $49.99 | CAN $64.99 | UK £46.99 doesn’t seem like a small price tag. Does the set rise to the price-point? You’ll have to read on to find out! The LEGO Group sent The Brothers Brick a copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews. Unboxing the parts, instructions, and sticker sheet This model is in a class slightly larger than the small pull-backs. It has nearly twice the piece-count of the Mercedes-AMG that we reviewed a few days ago, as well as a box that’s roughly twice the size. The front and...

While I’m used to working with something that has a few more teeth, I always appreciate a great LEGO container. And Larsvader definitely provides with this excellent treasure chest. The black wrought iron hardware is well-made, with 1×1 round tiles dotting the creation all over to replicate the case’s many rivets. And the use of black flame decorations to form the keyhole is a brilliant bit of part usage. It’s almost as impressive as the great mass of LEGO coins that Lars has accumulated to fill up this trunk. It makes quite the treasure for LEGO Pirates fans from the 90’s. The post The real treasure is the LEGO we found along the way appeared first on The Brothers Brick. From his class on LEGO functions each year at BrickCon to his day job educating children on STEM principles by way of the brick, Brandon Jones has a reputation not only for the creations he concocts, but also for the builders he inspires. And I’m certainly inspired by his latest creation, a replica of a plasma ball lamp, complete with moving lines of “electricity” powered via a Mindstorms motor. The central hub spits out bolts of transparent light blue and pink bricks, dancing in a seemingly random manner thanks to the programmed motor hidden in the base. But why talk about it when I can show you the build in action? Make sure to watch until the room’s lights are shut off, showcasing the interior lighting in the globe that illuminates those electric lines of blue and pink. It’s hard to imagine a closer replica made out of LEGO at this...
