Building a circular model using LEGO is a challenge in itself, but Plastic Pauper took on that challenge and built a microscale city with not just one ring, but three, creating nested neighborhoods that all have a specific purpose and vibe. The outer ring looks industrial, with smokestacks, factories, and other gray structures. The middle ring is composed of many smaller buildings and greenery, while the central section sports tall, sterile, and modern structures fit for the city’s wealthy elite. Clocking in at 4,090 pieces, the model is quite similar to the original design submitted by LEGO fan Aaron Hall. There’s plenty of play features, including a working paddle wheel and rudder. With a whopping 10 minifigures (and Thanos really pushing the term “mini”), the new LEGO Marvel 76323 Avengers: Endgame Final Battle is yet another recreation of Endgame‘s cinematic climax made in brick form. The set features plenty of Sling Ring portals large and small, an Ant-Man mech suit (not from the MCU), and some sparse rubble. But with only 621 pieces, this Marvel set is clearly all about the figs, which are Iron Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Falcon, a Chitauri warrior, and bigfig Thanos. The Free City of Andérida is entirely fictional, but depicted here in LEGO, there’s such a rich sense of history that you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a real town. Builder Vertaro takes inspiration from Venice and Lombard architecture, with classical columns and decorated stone walls. The terra cotta rooftops and sun-bleached stone strongly evoke old Italy. Arches in low relief lend the walls a sense of heightened craftsmanship. My favorite technique is the roof decorations made from clipping heart-shaped tiles in an undulating row, but the marble fountain decorated with frogs and minifig hands is also a showstopper. Vertaro built this scene of Aurelio’s reunion for the Age of the Unseated LEGO role-playing game, a collaborative storytelling experience told through LEGO creations. Inspired by the incredible sci-fi art of Pascal Blanché, builder Luka presents a stylized LEGO scene that looks equally at home in a Love Death & Robots segment or an Eiffel 65 video. When it comes to LEGO elements, basic blue is not exactly a difficult color to come by so Luka had plenty to choose from, but achieving this build’s biomechanical look saw the application of elements as diverse as an Aircraft Fuselage Aft Section, a Playground Slide, and 3×3 Elbow Bricks (so far only found in LEGO Dreamzzz sets – appropriate!) Of the build process, Luka describes wanting “to play around with brick built shadows and color contrast,” which I think was executed beautifully, though Luka also mentions feeling a lack of a violet color that would have added to the already impressive gradients and light-play. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most satisfying. Take this brilliant use of a white LEGO plant stem to denote champagne spray, for example. All in all, it’s a simple build and a simple composition but Erin Dempsey piece is so effective, you can pretty much hear the champagne cork pop.
