LEGO’s beloved Aquazone line and its successors, Aqua Raiders and Atlantis, brought playset adventures to the deep sea. While LEGO has released submarines since as part of the City universe, the sci-fi and fantasy flavored undersea explorers have been relegated to nostalgia and fan creations. We’re always excited to see a new moc inspired by LEGO’s aquatic themes, and there’s no better time to celebrate all things Aqua than #AquaJune. Organized by builder EntertaininglyLame, this year’s theme challenged builders to create a Underwater Outpost on a 10×10 stud base. Join us for a roundup of this year’s undersea entries!
Emberbuilder is a brand new face on LEGO Instragram, making their debut with Shepherd 6 – Boundary LiDAR Station. The build makes great use of verticality with some wonderful parts usage and towering kelp. I especially like the insectoid chrome domes in blue, a real flex as the element was exclusive to a single Knights Kingdom castle. Ember is definitely a builder to watch!
gnarlicbread_ often taps retro themes and aesthetics for mocs. Their tribute leans heavy on nostalgia with splashes of chrome and a unique seaweed formation made from propeller.
edgeofhearing takes a break from fantastic Classic Space stations to share this wonderful undersea lab. I love the airlock and the mix of Aquazone yellow octagonal tubing with vintage grey.
Danish Space Program is another nostalgia focused builder who brings brutalism to the seafloor. The curved window design is brilliant, and the contrasting hexagonal floor makes this such a fun entry.
plastic_badbot pairs classic yellow with smokey grey windows. The standout NPU is a Bionicle canister lid, cleverly integrated into the tower.
Event host Entertaininglylame goes impressively tall for their station. I love the pufferfish swimming through the coral, borrowed from the Ninjago Movie’s shark gang minifigs.
kutobricks shares a station dense with incredible parts usage that long time LEGO fans will adore, like a raised baseplate, a Bionicle eel and Znap struts on the tower!
lego_of_the_week incorporates the beautiful large blue windscreen that I always coveted as a TFOL but never acquired.
cuhappy10 is another new LEGO builder making their moc debut with this adorable undersea base.
classicstylecastle keeps the spirit of 80s and 90s playsets alive with renders of sets that never were. Their Aquazone tribute feels almost Blacktron adjacent.
Moving on to the AquaSharks subtheme, Ids de Jong assembles a strikingly alien looking station. The Jellyfish and mini sub are great side builds. Ids even works in a trio of clownfish from the latest CMF series.
Andrew Lee also taps the AquaSharks for a tower circled with octagonal windows. I love seeing the airlocks on these retro sets, as it’s a detail the original sets lacked.
hamp.lego.engineer fuses AquaShark colors with a touch of Spyrius and UFO for a sinister new faction: the Zotaxians.
GLAT mocs also creates a new theme, but branches out to a whole new color palette and otherworldly elements. The Medusanoids appear to be a native undersea species with Jellyfish tech. How cool!
Exoch.i is a rising star in the mech building world so it’s great to see the builder incorporate a mecha into their aquatic station. This base rises above the wave, with a crane to extract the mech from the sea floor. The color scheme connects the build to LEGO’s Atlantis theme.
TheCrackedBrick also plays with Atlantis colors for this fun mini vignette.
stapletapeworms_ shares a flourescent-heavy render of a station built into a cluster of BURPs (“big ugly rock pieces”!)
jacekbricks specializes in space ships and focused his build on just a submersible – the Plundering Piranha. This AquaRaiders vehicle uses buzz saws to cut into unsuspecting subs and stations.
Alex Lyman also focuses on villainous craft with a pair of AquaShark attack vehicles. The hammerhead design of the undersea scooter is inspired.
Finally, we have a pair of microscale entries. Shannon Sproule shares an elegant build that beautifully incorporates an AquaZone nose cone as a tower.
Cerin Beren designs a novel approach to challenge with a station built onto the roof of an undersea cave.
We hope these fun undersea builds wetted your Aquazone nostalgia. Classic Space, Castle, and Pirates have all had revival sets. Hey, LEGO, how about Aquazone next!
