Half-Life collab recreates the monsters of Black Mesa and beyond in LEGO [Feature]

When Half-Life debuted in 1998, it changed gaming forever, foregoing cutscenes in favor of a story that unfolded in gameplay. The developer Valve’s embrace of tools and mods would see Counter-Strike, Portal, and more born from Half-Life’s foundations, and that would grow into Steam, the world’s dominant PC gaming platform. Half-Life also features some all-time great enemy designs that look amazing in LEGO in a new collab.

giikei_mocs kicks things off with the silent protagonist, Gordon Freeman.  Built at a comparable scale to the recent Iron Man Mk3, Gordon looks slick in HEV suit (Mk4, maybe it was a Tony Stark design). Of course he comes armed with his signature crowbar. The builder promises instructions will come in the future.

Giikei also assembles the iconic Headcrab, seen both solo and attached to an unfortunate host. Depicting in FPS mode with Gordon’s crowbar is a great touch.

pakaru_builds contributes an energy-wielding Vortigaunt, a member of the alien species who would later go from enemy to ally int he battle against the Combine. Pakaru does a commendable job recreating the strange configuration of eyes and orifices of the Vortigaunt’s head.

The hideous yet tragic Nihilanth, big bad of the first Half-Life, is reproduced by deniko_productions. The builder perfectly captures the grotesque fetal head with its sharp teeth and a swollen dome to contain its vulnerable brain.

bionicleboss1 pulls double duty, building both a Xen Grunt and a a Gonarch. The former serve the Nihilanth. The latter is the final reproductive stage of the Headcrab and, an alien queen ready to unleash her brood.

v0r0x unleashes the aptly named Bullsquid. A toxic bipedal squid the size of a cow, you might want to bring more than a crowbar to fight one of these. The builder pulls off the alien design with a mix of Bionicle plates and newer constraction armor.

Finally, from builder  tr1butr0n007, we have the humble Snark. These self-destructing critters can be picked up and thrown like grenades, which turns them from nuisance to asset.

The builders in this Half-Life collab call it “Part 1,” so finger’s crossed we’ll see mocs of Combine synths, Antlions, Overwatch and more in the future.
