Most of the time, the thought of non-official custom minifigs makes me twitchy… But then I was invited to try out the new Minifigure Factory Designer on Lego.com, and I was surprised by how much fun it was. I could even use it to create a new Castle faction! Of course, any new faction is also an excuse to create a new custom design, but first, let’s take the Minifigure Factory for a spin.

While some LEGO stores have these Minifig Factory Stations on site, LEGO also allows you to create them directly on their website and have them shipped to you! (Sadly this feature is only available in the USA for the moment).

You can mix and match parts, select a head, pick out their hat or hair, legs and then you can customize their torso from a library of pre-made prints/decals that you can arrange to suit your whims. You can even add your own custom text which is a neat feature. The options aren’t unlimited of course (the torso designs are curated), but you can still come up with some pretty hilarious and creative designs for both the front and back prints. Currently only white torsos are provided for custom printing so obviously some prints will look better than others. Hopefully we will be given more color options in the future. Your minifig also gets a single accessory, such as an animal companion, sword, ring, balloon animal etc.

The user interface is super intuitive, and everything goes through a safe-for-work filter to keep it fun and friendly. Naturally, I used this power for good… and founded a new Castle faction: The Cluckshire Order (a.k.a. chicken knights).

After receiving my Cluckshire Knight in the mail, I decided to deck him out with some upgrades.

Arms and legs from the D&D Dragonborn Paladin, some armor pauldrons, and a half cape help bring our poultry paladin to life.

While the included head is fine, I swapped in Reinhardt’s from Overwatch for a more grizzled look.

I can totally see this being used to make custom factions in the future, or even to make custom party favors for my kids’ birthday parties. Definitely worth checking out if you’ve ever wanted to design your own official LEGO minifig!
